Using Caffeine to Control your Hunger

But lately, scientists are trying to find out if using caffeine to control your hunger is really possible. Some studies suggest that caffeine intake might suppress your appetite, leading to weight loss if consumed regularly. Pills containing green coffee beans extract are also available and are supposedly helping people eat less, burn more fat and also get several health benefits associated with coffee as well.

Coffee – How Does it Affect Our Bodies?

When we drink coffee, the whole array of substances contained within it is released in our bodies. The xanthine alkaloid called caffeine acts as a stimulant for our central nervous system and our metabolism. This is why people prefer drinking a cup of coffee in the morning – the alkaloid helps us prepare for the day ahead. You shouldn’t drink your coffee before you have breakfast however, as it can upset your stomach and cause nausea. Also, it’s important to have your cup of coffee with a glass of water on the side, as caffeine is also responsible for your body getting dehydrated at a much faster rate.

Other than that, if you’re drinking moderate amounts of coffee each day, you may experience some positive aspects as well. Studies have shown caffeine to decrease the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, Parkinson’s disease, some forms of diabetes, gout and heart disease. In most cases, these are due to coffee’s abilities to regulate blood pressure and help your metabolism process energy more efficiently.

Another important aspect you should keep in mind is that caffeine can be used to alleviate headaches. Usually, you’ll have to take a common pain relief pill, like ibuprofen to increase its effectiveness. However, even moderate coffee drinkers will experience headaches as a symptom of withdrawal if they stop drinking coffee. Too much coffee can also increase the likeliness of getting a severe headache, due to an increase in blood pressure associated with drinking the brew.

Caffeine and Weight Loss

The main aspect of a link between coffee and weight loss is using caffeine to control your hunger. Researchers have not yet come to a definite conclusion on the matter, but studies are underway. Even so, there are a lot of people who report lowered appetites after they drank a cup of their favorite coffee. A recent study showed that there is indeed a link between coffee consumption and appetite loss, but the same study showed that decaffeinated coffee had a much more noticeable effect than regular coffee. In most cases, the loss in appetite was only experienced within the next hour after consuming the beverage.

There are three main hormones which affect your appetite: ghrelin, leptin and peptide YY. Ghrelin is mainly responsible for increasing your appetite, while leptin and peptide YY are known to be responsible for decreasing appetite. Coffee, apparently, has a certain effect on these hormones. It’s still unclear how the hormones themselves regulate our appetites, let alone how coffee can affect them.

Another important thing to consider is the antioxidant concentration found in regular coffee. These antioxidants will help your body fight off free radicals – substances which can cause cancer, damage your immune system and cause rapid aging. Drinking moderate amounts of coffee on a daily basis will provide your body with quite a dose of a few antioxidants which are directly linked to improving the overall health of your organs and increasing your metabolic rate. This means that your body’s ability to burn up energy will increase substantially, allowing you to burn fat at higher rates when exercising, especially if you’re into cardio workouts. Not only that, but caffeine is also responsible for keeping your energy levels high for a longer period of time, allowing you to workout more without getting excessively tired.

All in all, using caffeine to control your hunger may just work for some people. But even if it doesn’t, regular amounts of coffee will provide you with important health benefits which are not to be ignored, as they can also help achieve the bottom line, which is losing weight.
