The mechanisms for appetite suppression

Introduction and background

Appetite suppression is crucial in weight loss. It is this lower or reduced appetite that leads to lesser or fewer calorie consumption (low calorie input). This reduced input is essential in losing weight with safety and success as a person would not be able to decrease his / her calorie input until and unless his / her appetite or hunger cravings are reduced. The following article is intended to help you understand the phenomenon of appetite and appetite suppression in a simple and easy way.

The centres / mechanisms of appetite suppression

Depending on their type, location and nature, appetite controlling centres or mechanisms can be divided into the following subtypes:

Appetite suppression via brain (CNS)

There is a whole part of in our brain that actually controls our hunger, desire to eat, satiety and appetite. As our brain is a part of central nervous system (CNS), this is also known as CNS appetite centre. It is this central part that sends signals to our us in the form of “desire” that makes us feel hungry or eat more.

Appetite suppression via stomach

Stomach is, perhaps, the most important organ in appetite control after brain. Remember the hunger pangs or appetite feeling is actually originated in our stomach. It is the contraction of our stomach walls that gives a feeling of pain and emptiness, some feelings that are collectively known as “appetite or hunger”. S

The emptiness of stomach acts as a stimulus and send a nerve signal to the brain that you are empty and need to eat something. In turn, your brain tells you to eat something to satiate yourself.  Similarly, when you are full, your stomach signals your brain that you you are already full or satiated  In turn, your brain, as a part of a negative feedback system, asks you to stop or not to eat more.

In real sense, appetite suppression via stomach is actually the appetite suppression via brain as the feeling of fullness in the stomach eventually “tricks” the brain into believing that you have already eaten much and don’t need to eat more.

Various methods to suppress appetite

In the light of the above mentioned mechanisms, various ways and methods have been recommended or practised by experts to control or reduce appetite in people. Some of such methods include:

Appetite suppression via hypnosis / meditation

It is more of a “psychological appetite suppression” in which your brain is trained to control hunger by certain mind and body controlling exercises  as a party of a larger behavioural therapy. Some of such examples include Yoga, hypnotic therapy and use of placebo medications.

Appetite suppression via surgery

It is an artificial  ways or suppressing appetite in which a gastric surgeon ligates a portion of stomach and makes it shorter.A s a result food remains for lesser time in stomach and is quickly absorbed in the small intestine instead. Therefore, stomach does not feel the feeling of “emptiness” which would lead to the sense of hunger pains or appetite. This method, however, is permanent, very expensive and has some very serious side effects in the long run.

Herbal appetite suppressants

Probably the safest and most successful method, herbal appetite suppression is now getting popular day by day because of its high rate of success, high safety profile and economy and lost costs. There have been various patches, drinks, supplements and pills that are meant to suppress your appetite. Fortunately, there are quite a few good natural and all herbal appetite suppressants that can be used by people of all genders, races and ages to suppress their appetite naturally and achieve a desired, optimal  weight loss goal.
