Does Smoking Affect Appetite?

Introduction and Background

Maintaining good health is very important when it comes to taking care of the body and one of the most important aspects of this care is keeping a close eye on our appetite. There are countless reasons as to why one might not have a properly balanced appetite and each and every one of these reasons is equally important in its own stead. However, there is one particular factor that has shown a lot of relevance and impact towards appetite and it is also one of the most studied things in medical science. This particular factor being referred here is actually smoking. Smoking is a topic of conversation not only among the people from the medical field but also every person out there who may or may not be connected to it. While there are many other things about smoking that should be well known to every person out there, the focus of this article is to see how smoking is related to appetite and how can it affect it. To find out more about how the chemical combination of cigarettes and other smoking objects impacts the appetite of a person and what the results of such an exposure are, keep reading.

The public view of smoking

When it comes to appetite, smoking materials, cigarette in particular are advertised to be able to suppress the appetite and keep a person slim. The female consumers of tobacco related products are particularly the main target of these companies. But the question that comes to mind here is that how does a cigarette induce this effect and what are the consequences? The answer to that is nicotine. This is discussed further in the next part.

The impact of nicotine

Nicotine is very famous for its ability to suppress appetite. Even Europeans from the old world and indigenous pre-Columbian Americans used this to suppress their appetites. This happens because nicotine can decrease the amount of insulin that the body is producing and the result is a fall in the concentration of insulin in the body. This automatically reduces the person’s cravings for all sugary foods. Nicotine is also diuretic and can decrease the calcium level in a person’s body.

The perception of controlling weight by smoking

The highest percentages of people who smoke to lose weight are adolescents, white female adolescents in particular. Since the concept of being slim and the social pressure that comes with it for women is so strong, it results in them feeling convinced that they should smoke in order to control their weights.

Weight gain from cessation

This is one of the biggest reasons why so many people don’t quit smoking. Whether or not smoking can actually control weight is completely trivial and there is little evidence showing that there could possibly be actually benefits of smoking in terms of weight loss. However, the thing that is definite is the fact that those who try to stop smoking are almost certainly going to gain weight as one of the biggest results of quitting smoking is a frequent urge to eat. This is why people who are regular smokers find little motivation to quit.

A lot of different studies and researches have been conducted over the period of time to try and determine if smoking has any impact on appetite. While the effects that nicotine carries in it are very clear, there is still no solid evidence that it is only smoking that can promote a suppression of appetite.

There may be evidence that smoking can be a factor in suppressing the appetite and keeping one’s weight under control but is it really worthwhile to smoke in order to control your appetite? Considering the amount of damage that smoking brings to the body, the answer is quite clear; no it isn’t.
