What Is Green Tea and How is it Processed?

What exactly is tea? Tea comes from an evergreen shrub called Camellia Sinensis. There are over three thousand varieties of Camellia Sinensis around the globe. The shrubs prefer to grow in mountainous environments with plenty of rain.

Tea is rumoured to have been first discovered in China about 5000 years ago when some leaves from this shrub blew into some boiling water. The Emperor of China, Shen-Nun, drank this brew and liked it so much he decided to have it more often.

Even though the teas have different names, they all come from the same Camellia Sinensis shrub. They derive their names based on how they were processed.

Green Tea

Green tea is a tea leaf that has been harvested but no fermentation has occured. The leaf is allowed to wither and dry. This results in a mild flavor and a light green color.

Green tea is an excellent drink for aiding digestion after a meal. It is also said to have antioxidant and fat burning properties, to help you with weight loss.

Gunpowder

Gunpowder green tea is simply a green tea leaf that has been rolled into small pellets. When brewed into a hot drink, the tea leaf will open up into a longer leaf to create a stronger flavor. Why is it called gunpowder? It is called gunpowder tea simply because the rolled pellets look similar to gunpowder or bullets.

Matcha

Matcha comes from the Japanese word matsu, which means to rub, and the Chinese word cha, which means tea. Tea makers take the green tea leaf after it has been steamed and dried and grind it down into a powder. It is then later used as a flavoring for other teas, or even added as an ingredient in desserts.

Oolong

Oolong tea is a blend of black tea and green tea. The tea leaves are allowed to wither before being partially fermented and then dried. This creates a mild tea that has a slightly fruity flavor and is quite delicious.

Black

Is the most popular tea. It has a strong flavor and is a reddish-brown color due to an extensive fermentation and drying process. This means that the crushed tea leaves are allowed to be exposed to the open air until they are completely withered and dried.

White

White tea comes from a young tea leaf that has been harvested even before the buds of the shrub have completely opened. The leaves are then steamed and dried. This creates a soft, delicate flavor after it is brewed. The color is usually almost white or clear.

Ceylon

Ceylon tea is not exactly a type of tea. Rather, it’s named after the area where the tea originates from. This particular type of tea comes from Sri Lanka, which used to be known as Ceylon. It also a reference to the shape of the leaf on the tea shrub which is known to be long and stiff. The tea itself is a black tea and the flavor is unmistakable. It is considered to have a full-bodied flavor with some citrus undertones.

How to Make the Perfect Cup of Green Tea

You can buy most teas dried, in either tea bags or loose leaf packets. Normally, a good brew of tea just needs some boiling water, the tea leaf, and, if you like it sweet, a spoon or two of sugar or honey.

However, green tea is slightly different. When heating water for your green tea, allow the water to boil, as usual, but then leave it to cool for a few minutes.. The ideal temperature is 140-185°F.

Pour the hot water over cup containing the tea leaves or tea bags. Leave for 2-3 minutes before removing the tea bag or straining the leaves. If you leave it any longer, or use boiling water directly, you are likely to find the tea has a bitter flavor.

Add sugar or honey, if preferred, and enjoy your perfect cup of green tea. My personal favorite addition is not sweetener, but a few fresh mint leaves. Add these to the cup before adding the water, to make a refreshing, healthy drink.

We chose Ahmad green tea as the best green tea brand. The tea is not bitter and has a great aroma. It is also very flavorful and mild. Drinking it gives you a feeling of warmth and, because of the mild palate, it leaves you wanting more. All of Ahmad Green Teas give you the promise of joy upon your tongue.

Even though we selected Ahmad Tea as our favorite, we had two close second-place winners. Twinings and Bigelow tea were our second choices. They’re both in second place because it was too hard to choose between them.

Their teas were not as bitter as some others we tried, and we did enjoy their mild flavors.

All of the other chosen brands were also delicious and with so much variety, you are sure to find at least one type that will become your favorite. An added bonus is, of course, that any tea containing green tea is healthy and therapeutic. So, we truly recommend that you try them all and discover for yourself which, in your opinion, is the best green tea brand.
